3/30/09 - There comes a time in a developers life when he/she realizes it's all for nothing. I've come to that decision recently as Microsoft has released sales data for their Community Games marketplace. Now, I never expected it to be like the iPhone or any kind of "Get Rich Quick" scheme. I did, however, expect to make enough money to fund future development of my 3D game engine, Reactor 3D.

Sure, I didn't spent as much time on Reactor 3D as I might have wished. Sure, Reactor 3D didn't really generate the kind of team I was expecting but I still trucked on. I spent two years developing a game engine capable of being used for a wide variety of games. I even tried to model the API after another game engines super easy structure and naming conventions to help ease people into the world of 3D game development.

As it stands, Reactor 3D will no longer be offered to the public and those of you who still have the code are free to use it for what you wish. There will be no more updates, no more patches, no new features, and definitely no more SVN access to the codebase.

So, while I appreciate all the help from everyone in the Reactor 3D forums with special thanks to SpaXe and DrunkenPuppy15 for their devotion to Reactor 3D training, I am leaving my dream behind and I am moving on.

Alchemist, my Community Game built using Reactor 3D was a hit when you consider the conversion rate (7% conv. rate). It simply didn't have the download numbers. I thought that Community Games was going to be like a console style game store, much like the App store of Apple for the iPhone/iPod. However, it turns out Community Games became more of a quasi junk pile for weird and obscure apps (like Rumble Masseuse and Fireplace) that those of us wanting to make games and wanting to make money barely left with the cost of the Community Games premium membership.

Weapon Of Choice - Sales Info, even they couldn't believe what a flop community games really was and they were a best seller.

So, Thank you all for your support and interest in Reactor 3D but one must learn when to cut ones losses and I'm cutting the cord today.

Sincerely,
Gabriel "Aeon" Reiser
